GOD COMPLEX: BART WAS NOT HERE

God Complex
by Bart Was Not Here

Stories are perspectives and series of situations. God Complex is a place of unapologetic personal perspective. It is a fictional world born out of a collision of art and ego.

The main character is the artist’s take on a Jinn (Genie) from Islamic Mythology with a twist of pop culture influences. The running theme in all the paintings is the romantic hunger for power or dominance. Here, the audience is presented with a conflict in each image. It is a chance to conjure up the inception and conclusion of the story beyond the image. The art is within, pulling apart the conflict and unfolding it. What the audience does with the situation within each painting is up to their imagination.

This series is highly inspired by Heironymous Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights, Roy Lichtenstein, Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, and the Pop Surrealist movement.

Q&A with BART WAS NOT HERE

Bart Was Not Here (Kyaw Moe Khine) is a 23 year old artist born and raised in Yangon, Myanmar. Tempted by the tags and the bubble letters painted on the streets of Yangon, Kyaw Moe Khine began “experimenting” with spray cans in the 8th grade. He gave himself the alias “Bart Was Not Here” after the character in The Simpsons, alluding to the tongue-in-cheek quality in his artworks. Inspired by Pop Art and Lowbrow Art along with the popular culture aspects, Bart’s expressions in his art on or off the walls are a mix of text and image juxtaposing Burmese and imported cultural norms.

He received a Diploma in Fine Arts from Lasalle College of the Arts in 2018. He has participated and organised a number of Street Art and Lowbrow Art exhibitions in Yangon, including ROAR: Unleased and ROAR: RocnRoll at Myanm/art in 2016 and 2017 respectively. In October 2018 his series of fine art prints was successfully presented at Saatchi’s art fair in London as well as in “Devotion & Protest” at Intersections Gallery, Singapore. He is represented by Myanm/art gallery in Yangon, Myanmar. This is his first ever solo exhibition.
